से वृत्ति उस व्याख्या को कहते हैं जो कुछ संक्षिप्त होती है
और जिसकी रचना गंभीर होती है ।

विशेष—यह चार प्रकार की कही गई है और भिन्न भिन्न रसों के

रस के लिये, सात्वतो वृत्ति वीर रस के लिये, आरभटी वृत्ति
रौद्र और वीभत्स रस के लिये और भारती वृत्ति शेष अन्य
रसों के लिये । जाहँ अच्छा वेशभूषावली नायिका, बहुत सी
स्त्रियों और न्यगीत तथा भोगविलास आदि का वर्णन हो,
उसे कौशिकी; जहाँ वीरता, दानशक्ति, दया, सरलता आदि
वर्णन हो उसे सात्वती; जहाँ माया, इंद्रजाल, संग्राम, क्रोध
आदि का वर्णन हो, उसे आरभटी, और जहाँ संस्कृत बहुल
कथोपकथन हो उसे भारती वृत्ति कहते हैं । इन चारों वृत्तियों के भी कई अवांतर भेद माने गए हैं ।
