The digest is a reduced editorial format compared to a conventional journal even higher than that of a pocket book. Its form ratio is 3: 2. Its dimensions are 14 inches in width for 21 in height. Born initially with different sizes, they have adapted to the evolution of printing processes. An alternative name for the digest format is the catalog, adopted for example by Avon for home-based sales. The digest format was considered convenient for readers who could carry it with them. The format was named after the Reader's Digest magazine, which adopted it since its founding in 1922. The word digest referred to the contents of the magazine: selections and summaries of articles from a variety of sources and made more "digestible" for the player. Subsequently, the term generalized and became indicative of the format of the publication rather than its content.

Il digest è un formato editoriale ridotto rispetto a quello di una rivista convenzionale ancorché maggiore di quello di un libro tascabile. Il suo rapporto di forma è di 3:2. Le sue dimensioni sono 14 cm in larghezza per 21 in altezza. Nato inizialmente con dimensioni diverse, esse si sono adattate all'evoluzione dei processi di stampa. Un nome alternativo del formato digest è il catalog, adottato per esempio dalla Avon per le vendite a domicilio. Il formato digest era considerato comodo per i lettori che potevano portarlo con sé. Il formato prese il nome dalla rivista Reader's Digest che l'adottò a partire dalla sua fondazione nel 1922. La parola digest era riferita ai contenuti della rivista: selezioni e riassunti di articoli provenienti da una varietà di fonti e resi più "digeribili" per il lettore. Successivamente il termine si generalizzò e divenne indicativo del formato della pubblicazione piuttosto che del suo contenuto.
