Greece
Republic of Greece (Greek language, Greek: Ελληνική Δημοκρατία), commonly known as Greece is a republic nation located in the southeast part of Europe, southeast of the Balkans. In addition to the peninsular southern part and the Peloponnesos peninsula, it is composed of approximately 3,000 islands centered on the Aegean Sea. The north borders Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria from the west, and Turkey to the east. The mainland is surrounded by the Aegean Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea in the west and the Mediterranean Sea in the south. Greece is one of the roots of the Mediterranean civilization and has great influence on the history of Europe, Africa and Asia as a country located at the intersection of multiple civilizations. Current Greece is a member of the United Nations, the EU and NATO. In 1896 and 2004 the modern Olympic Games were held in the capital city of Athens.
