The azimuth angle is the angle measured in the spherical coordinate system and is calculated by projecting the vector from the observer at the origin to the object perpendicularly to the reference plane and making it the reference vector on the reference plane. An example of an azimuth is the location of a star. Here, the star is the target, the reference plane is given as the horizon or sea level, and the reference vector is toward the north. The azimuth angle is given as the angle between the northern and vertically projected stars on the horizon. The azimuth angle is mainly expressed on the dodo. The azimuth is practically applied to navigation, astronomy, engineering, guidance, and medicine.

방위각은 구면좌표계에서 잰 각도이며 원점에 있는 관측자로 부터 대상까지의 벡터를 기준 평면에 수직으로 투영하여서 그것이 기준 평면 위에 있는 기준 벡터와 이루는 각으로 계산된다. 방위각의 한 예는 별의 위치측정이다. 여기서 별이 대상이 되고 기준 평면은 지평면 또는 해수면으로 주어지며 기준 벡터는 북쪽을 향한다. 방위각은 북쪽과 지평면에 수직으로 투영된 별 사이의 각도로 주어진다. 방위각은 주로 도단위로 표현된다. 방위각은 항법, 천문학, 공학, 지도 그리고 포술 등에 실용적으로 응용되고 있다.
