The Byzantine Empire or the Eastern Roman Empire was the empire that followed the Roman Empire in the Middle Ages, the capital was Constantinople, and the Emperor, who ruled the Roman Emperor, ruled. 비잔티움 제국 또는 동로마 제국은 중세 시대에 로마 제국의 뒤를 이은 제국으로, 수도는 콘스탄티노폴리스였고 로마 황제를 직계한 황제가 다스렸다. 이 나라는 ‘로마 제국’으로 불렸고 제국 주민과 주변 나라 사람들은 ‘로마니아’라고 부르기도 했다. 로마 제국과 달리 인구 대다수가 사실상 그리스어를 썼다. ‘로마 제국’과 ‘비잔티움 제국’을 구분하는 것은 주로 현대의 관습에 따른 것으로, 비잔티움 제국이 갈라져 나온 정확한 시점을 잡을 수는 없으나 콘스탄티누스 1세가 아나톨리아의 니코메데이아에서 보스포로스 해협의 비잔티온으로 천도한 서기 324년이 분수령이다. 서기 330년부터 1453년까지 1123년동안 존속했다. 비잔티움 제국은 중세 유럽에서 가장 막강한 전제 군주제 국가였고 한때 활발한 정복 사업으로써 구 로마 제국의 고토를 거의 되찾아 광활한 지중해 세계를 통일하여 그 중심지 역할을 하였고 심지어 중동 지역으로 진출하기도 하였다.
