Hafnium is a chemical element with the symbol Hf and atomic number 72. It is a translucent silver-gray transition metal, chemically similar to zirconium and found together in ores containing zirconium. In 1869, Dimitri Mendeleev first predicted the existence of hafnium, and in 1923 it became the second most-discovered element among the stable elements. It was named after the Latin name of Hapnia in Copenhagen, where the element was found. Hafnium is used in filaments and electrodes, and has a property of absorbing neutrons. It is used in control rods of reactors together with zirconium alloys. Hafnium oxide is also used in semiconductor manufacturing processes. It is used to make special purpose superalloy by mixing with niobium, titanium, tungsten and so on.

하프늄은 화학 원소로 기호는 Hf, 원자 번호는 72이다. 은회색의 광택이 있는 전이 금속으로, 화학적으로 지르코늄과 비슷하고 지르코늄을 함유한 광석에서 함께 발견된다. 1869년 드미트리 멘델레예프가 하프늄의 존재를 처음으로 예상하였고 1923년 발견되어 안정한 원소 중에서는 마지막에서 두 번째로 발견된 원소가 되었다. 원소가 발견된 도시인 코펜하겐의 라틴어 지명 하프니아에서 이름을 땄다. 하프늄은 필라멘트와 전극 등에 사용되며, 중성자를 잘 흡수하는 성질이 있어 지르코늄 합금과 함께 원자로의 제어봉에 사용된다. 하프늄 산화물은 반도체 제조 공정에 사용되기도 한다. 나이오븀, 티타늄, 텅스텐 등과 혼합하여 특수한 목적의 초합금을 만드는데 사용된다.
