Sometimes abscess formation requires drainage surgery. 화농성척추염 결핵성 척추염이 화학요법의 발달과 함께 감소된 후 과거 그늘에 가려져 있었던 이 질병이 눈에 띄게 되었다. 급성기에는 발열, 적혈구 침강속도 증가, 백혈구증가등 일반적인 화농성질환에 준하는 증상과 함께 국소의 척추부 통증이 심하고 패혈증이 되어 사망하게 되는 수도 있다. 염증을 일으키는 균은 황색 포도상구균이 많다. X-선상에서는 급성인 경우에는 골경화성, 및 반응성 골증식을 보게 되므로 결핵성과 감별할 수 있는데 아급성, 만성에서는 초기 감별이 어려운 때가 있다. 구배형성(亀背形成)은 생기지 않는다. 확정진단은 염증을 일으킨 균의 규명이 필요하다. 치료는 화학요법과 안정요법을 병행하고 반은 치유한다. 농양형성이 나타날 때에는 배농수술을 필요로 할 때도 있다.
