A modem is a device that modulates and transmits a signal for information transmission and demodulates it to recover the original signal at the receiving end. It is mainly used as a peripheral device for computer information communication. The reason for the modulation is that if a digital signal is sent directly to the transmission line, the signal is not transmitted properly. If the data is consecutive in the same bit, there is a problem in signal transmission due to the transmission characteristic, so that it is modulated according to the characteristic of the transmission line. A modem is a type of analog-to-digital converter that converts a computer's digital signal into an analog signal, transmits the analog signal, and reads the analog signal as a digital signal. In a narrow sense, it is a peripheral device that connects a personal computer and a telephone line. The initial modem was mainly used for data transmission over a telephone line. Since it is not easy for an individual to access a communication network before the activation of the internet network used by the individual, communication with the personal computer and the server is performed through the telephone network.

모뎀은 정보 전달을 위해 신호를 변조하여 송신하고 수신측에서 원래의 신호로 복구하기 위해 복조하는 장치를 말한다. 주로 컴퓨터 정보통신을 위한 주변장치로 많이 사용한다. 변조를 하는 이유는 전송선에 디지털 신호를 바로 보내면 신호 전달이 잘 되지 않기 때문이다. 데이터가 같은 비트로 연속되면 전송특성상 신호 전달에 문제가 발생하므로 전송선의 특성에 맞추어 변조한다. 모뎀은 아날로그/디지털 변환기의 일종으로 컴퓨터의 디지털 신호를 아날로그 신호로 바꾸어 전송하고, 아날로그 신호를 받아 디지털 신호로 읽어낸다. 좁은 의미에서는 개인용 컴퓨터와 전화선을 이어주는 주변장치이다. 초기 모뎀은 주로 전화선을 통해 데이터 전송을 위해 사용하였다. 개인이 사용하는 인터넷망이 활성화되기 이전에 개인이 통신망에 접속하는 것이 비용측면에서 쉽지 않았기 때문에 전화망을 통해 개인컴퓨터와 서버와의 통신을 하게 되었다.
