Modem is a computer device that executes a process that converts digital signals generated by the computer to waveform signals so they can be transmitted through telephone lines and vice versa. In short, it has the ability to divert a wave signal to a digital signal. Modem is an English word abbreviation for modulator-demolator, modulator and decoder. Digital signals are signals that contain a series of electronic switches represented by live and die features, their life features are represented by number 1, while the features of their deaths are represented by 0. With the use of this feature and the combination of the characters then the computer is able to produce text, graphics and so on data . Different from analog signals, it is a signal of sound waveform through electrical lines and data and information generated based on wave strength and frequency of frequency. Modem merupakan peranti komputer yang melaksanakan proses yang menukarkan isyarat berbentuk digital yang dihasilkan oleh komputer kepada isyarat berbentuk gelombang supaya ia dapat dihantarkan menerusi talian telefon dan juga sebaliknya. Dengan pendek kata, ia berkemampuan untuk mengalihkan isyarat gelombang kepada isyarat digital. Modem ialah perkataan bahasa Inggeris yang merupakan singkatan bagi modulator-demolator, iaitu pemodulat dan penyahmodulat. Isyarat digital ialah isyarat yang mengandungi siri suis elektronik yang diwakili oleh ciri hidup dan mati, ciri hidupnya diwakili oleh angka 1, manakala ciri matinya pula diwakili oleh 0. Dengan penggunaan ciri ini serta kombinasi angkanyalah maka komputer mampu menghasilkan data berbentuk teks, grafik dan sebagainya. Berlainan pula dengan isyarat berbentuk analog, ia adalah isyarat berbentuk gelombang bunyi melalui talian elektrik dan data serta maklumat dihasilkan berasaskan kekuatan gelombang serta tahap frekuensinya. Ringkasnya, modem berfungsi mengubahkan isyarat berbentuk 1 dan 0 tadi kepada isyarat berbentuk gelombang serta frekuensi begitu jugalah sebaliknya.
