Bateq

The Bateq tribe is a native of Negrito tribes in Kelantan and Pahang. Their number is not crowded, about 1516 people. They live in tropical rain forests especially in Taman Negara Malaysia. The name Bateq means the Orang Asli Malays. They are from Austronesian groups who take a boat to and from the islands of Southeast Asia. The Bateq people began to be documented by Russian author Nicholai Miklukho-Maklai in 1878. The language used was the sub-Mon-Khmer of the Austro-Asian language family. The tools they have are blowpipe and hairbrush. Now they also have radio, cigarettes and mobile phones. The Government of Malaysia also provides a strong and well-organized home, complete with water and electricity. The Bateq tribe lives in a family group, in a hut or a small tent. The number of families is about 10 families. They believe as landlords and not as land owners. They live on the move from logging and development activities. They have no real leader because usually adults are considered leaders. Adults take precedence.
