Ia adalah tanaman yang banyak terdapat di Malaysia. Terdapat 2 jenis bayam yang utama dimakan di Malaysia iaitu bayam hijau dan bayam merah. Bayam adalah daripada keluarga Amaranthaceae. Ia kaya dengan Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C dan zat-zat galian seperti zat besi, fosforus, kalium, mangan dan zink. Di Malaysia, bayam ditanam untuk tujuan pasaran domestik dan sebahagiannya untuk diekspot ke Singapura dan Brunei. Bayam dikenali di Malaysia danIndonesia dan juga sebagai Amaranth, Amaranthe, Kulitis, Aopa, Phtii, Phakkhom-suan, Hom dan Raudeen. Bayam dipercayai berasal dari Asia Tenggara dan juga terdapat dan tersebar ke Amerika Tengah dan Afrika tetapi dari genus yang agak berbeza. Bayam merupakan sayuran yang sangat popular di Malaysia dan Indonesia dan merupakan sayuran popular yang 10 teratas dari segi penanaman dan penggunaan. Terdapat seluas 4,180 hektar bayam di tanam di Malaysia dengan pengeluaran sebanyak 45,140 metrik tan pada tahun 2010. Kawasan utama bagi penanaman bayam di Malaysia adalah di Negeri Johor diikuti dengan Selangor dan Pulau Pinang.
