Bisaya

WHAT DOES BISAYA MEAN IN MALAY?

Bisaya

Bisaya is a native of northwestern and along the coast of Borneo, Malaysia and is concentrated around the Beaufort, Padas River, Klias River, Gaya Island in Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan and the Limbang River in the east of Sarawak. The Bisaya nation known as the Malays or Islam by the Lun Bawang / Lun Dayeh, Dusun, and Murut Bisaya tribes is said to be among the first to accept Islam in the early 13th century. The first head of the Bisaya is Awang Kaltim Betatar or Sultan Mohammad Shah. The initial stage of entry of the Bisaya into Islam is through trade relations with merchants from Arab lands. If viewed from the perspective of social life, a little Arab influence plays a role in their day-to-day affairs. The Bisaya nation has an interest in agriculture and it is also a major source of income. These tribes are even related to the Bisaya in the Philippines but the Bisaya tribes are only found in Borneo, Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia alone.
