Hartal is the word Gujerati which means mass protests, usually involving a strike, closure of work, office, shop and court as a form of public default. The term is popular in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, especially the Indian independence warrior Mahatma Gandhi. For Mahatma Gandhi, hartal is a religious element that is fasting, prayers but excluding violence. Hartal was first held in Malaysia / Malaya on 20 October 1947, organized by the Malayan Council for Joint Action of the People's Power Center as a protest to the Constitution proposed by the British colonizers. General strike was held in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s like Hartal Malaya 1947 and Hartal Pulau Pinang 1967.

Hartal ialah perkataan Gujerati yang bermaksud protes beramai-ramai, biasanya membabitkan mogok, penutupan tempat kerja, pejabat, kedai dan mahkamah sebagai satu bentuk keingkaran awam. Istilah ini popular di India, Pakistan, Bangladesh dan Sri Langka terutama tokoh pejuang kemerdekaan India Mahatma Gandhi. Bagi Mahatma Gandhi, hartal ada unsur ugama iaitu berpuasa, solat tetapi tidak termasuk keganasan. Hartal pertama kali diadakan di Malaysia / Tanah Melayu pada 20 Oktober 1947, dianjurkan gabungan Pusat Tenaga Rakyat – All Malayan Council for Joint Action sebagai bantahan kepada Perlembagaan yang dicadangkan penjajah British. Mogok umum pernah diadakan pada tahun 1940-an, 1950-an, 1960-an seperti Hartal Malaya 1947 dan Hartal Pulau Pinang 1967.
