Herpetology is a zoological branch concerned with amphibian and reptile studies. Batracology is a herpetological branch of amphibian studies alone. Herpetology is beneficial to humans through a study of the role of amphibians and reptiles in the global ecology, especially since amphibians are often very sensitive to changes in the environment, and therefore provide a real human warning of the ongoing major changes. Herpetologi merupakan cabang zoologi yang berkenaan dengan kajian amfibia dan reptilia. Batrakologi merupakan satu cabang herpetologi yang berkenaan dengan kajian amfibia sahaja. Herpetologi bermanfaat kepada manusia menerusi kajian terhadap peranan amfibia dan reptilia dalam ekologi sejagat, terutama sekali kerana amfibia lazimnya amat peka kepada perubahan dalam persekitaran, dan oleh itu memberi manusia amaran yang nyata akan sedang berlangsungnya perubahan besar. Sesetengah toksin dan bisa hasilan reptilia dan amfibia adalah berguna untuk perubatan manusia. Kini, sesetengah bisa ular telah digunakan untuk mencipta anti-pembeku untuk tujuan merawat pesakit angin ahmar dan serangan jantung. Istilah "herpetologi" berasal dari bahasa Yunani: ἑρπετόν, herpeton, "binatang merangkak" dan -λογία, -logia.. Pada zaman dahulu, reptilia dan amfibia digolongkan dalam kelas yang sama iaitu "herpetilia" mengurut pengelasan haiwan oleh Linnaeus. Terdapat lebih daripada 6700 spesies amfibia dan lebih daripada 9000 spesies reptilia.
