The index is an intermediary that refers to a document. However, the index here is the index found on the back of the book or in the English language called BOB - back of the book. The book index is a list of alphabetically ordered lists from A to Z that represents the words contained in the book. Indek buku adalah suatu senarai daftar kata- kata kunci yang di susun secara abjad dari A hingga ke Z yang mewakili perkataan-perkataan yang terdapat di dalam buku tersebut. Setiap perkataan yang dijadikan indek mempunyai tanda nombor muka surat yang bermaksud maklumat perkataan tersebut bolah di cari didalam buku tersebut sekiranya pengguna membuka nombor lembaran muka surat tersebut. JENIS INDEKS - 1. Indek yang menyatu dengan buku - iaitu didalam sebuah buku mempunyai indek di belakang lembarannya. 2. Indek yang terpisah dari buku - iaitu lebih dikenali sebagai buku indeks. KEBAIKKAN ADANYA INDEKS - Pengindeksan merupakan satu cara/metod menonjolkan maklumat kepermukaan. Kalau tidak, maklumat tersebut akan tersembunyi di dalam buku-buku dan susah diketahui oleh orang ramai. Dengan adanya indek, membuat pengetahuan lebih mudah dicapai.
