Menurut ajaran Islam, setelah kematian dari setiap jiwa akan menuju ke alam barzakh atau secaram sinonimnya juga turut disebut sebagai alam kubur, dimana si mayat akan dibolehkan kembali bangkit dan berbicara ketika ditanya oleh kedua-dua Malaikat Munkar dan Nakir, walaupun tubuhnya telah hancur. Pertanyaan akan dimulakan yakni selepas proses pengkebumian telah selesai dan setelah 70 langkah orang terakhir beredar dari tempat dikuburkan sesuatu mayat. Malaikat Munkar dan Nakir akan menanyakan beberapa hal berikut, "Siapakah Tuhanmu?", "Siapa Nabi mu?", "Apa Agama mu?", jawapan bagi pertanyaan tersebut adalah Tuhan mereka adalah Allah, nabinya Muhammad dan agamanya adalah Islam, maka si mayat akan diberikan keluasan dan diterangkan kuburnya sehinggalah tibanya hari kebangkitan.
