Turtles are a kind of animal that has a hard shell on the back with the paddle feet in front. This makes the turtle as an agile animal swimming in the water but clumsy to move on the ground. This is different from the turtles that have similar legs for all four legs. Turtles are classified in vertebrate animals, reptile classes are similar to snakes, lizards, turtles, lip and tails. Turtles also have scaly skin, breathe through the lungs, have body temperature according to ambient temperature, laying eggs and are marine animals. Penyu merupakan sejenis haiwan yang mempunyai cangkerang keras di bahagian belakang dengan kaki pendayung di hadapan. Ini menjadikan penyu sebagai haiwan yang tangkas berenang di dalam air tetapi kekok untuk bergerak di daratan. Ini berbeza dengan kura-kura yang mempunyai kaki yang serupa bagi keempat-empat kakinya. Penyu digolongkan di dalam haiwan vertebrata, kelas reptilia sama dengan ular, cicak, kura-kura, labi-labi dan tuntung. Penyu juga mempunyai kulit yang bersisik, bernafas melalui paru-paru, mempunyai suhu badan yang mengikut suhu persekitaran, bertelur dan merupakan haiwan marin. Mengikut kajian yang telah dijalankan, didapati penyu telah wujud semenjak akhir zaman Jurassic, iaitu sezaman dengan dinosaur. Penyu Archelon yang bersaiz 6 meter panjang ataupun penyu Cimochelys, berenang di laut silam seperti penyu masa kini. Walaupun penyu boleh menyelam dan berada dalam air untuk tempoh yang lama, tetapi ia mestilah timbul ke permukaan air untuk bernafas. Penyu menggunakan paru-paru untuk bernafas. Kesemua spesies penyu diancam bahaya kepupusan disebabkan mengalami banyak ancaman semulajadi dan ancaman manusia sepanjang hayat mereka.
