The protocol is the ethics of diplomacy and state affairs. The protocol is a guide that determines how an activity should be performed. In ancient times, the word protocol was used primarily in diplomatic and governmental fields as an attempt to establish an inadequate guideline, in the twenty-first century, the word protocol refers primarily to the field of computer and communication protocols. In international law and international relations, the protocol is an international agreement or agreement to international treaties or prior agreements. The protocol may correct previous agreement, or add additional provisions. The parties to the original agreement do not have to accept the protocol; sometimes it is described by defining it as a 'choice protocol', especially where most parties to the original agreement do not support the protocol. Pada masa dahulu, perkataan protokol digunakan terutamanya dalam bidang diplomatik dan kerajaan sebagai cubaan menetapkan garis panduan tidak bertulis, pada abad ke dua puluh satu, perkataan protokol merujuk terutamanya dalam bidang komputer dan protokol komunikasi. Dalam undang-undang antarabangsa dan hubungan antarabangsa, protokol adalah persetujuan atau perjanjian antarabangsa tambahan kepada perjanjian antarabangsa atau persetujuan yang terdahulu. Protokol boleh memperbetulkan persetujuan sebelumnya, atau menambah peruntukan tambahan. Pihak kepada perjanjian asal tidak perlu menerima protokol; kadang kala ia dijelaskan dengan mentakrifkannya sebagai 'protokol pilihan', terutamanya di mana kebanyakan pihak kepada perjanjian asal tidak menyokong protokol tersebut.
