Sumazau Dance

Tarian Sumazau

Sumazau Dance is a popular Sabah dance tradition that is very popular in Sabah and throughout Malaysia. It is a traditional dance of the Kadazandusun tribe which is often performed at Tadau Kaamatan which means the Harvest Day celebrated in Sabah every May. The Sumazau dance is inspired by the avian bird pattern seen by peasants who relax in rice fields during the harvest season. Every dancer that makes this dance moves just a few centimeters out of the other dancers without touching. His ritual dance fulfills various functions such as dance performed by sumazau to express gratitude related to the planting and harvesting of rice and also to resist amusement, sedition, and cure diseases. The dance is performed by peasants comprising men and women wearing their traditional outfits. The dance is played with a gong gong, usually 6 gongs of varying sizes and one drum with a special beat. Sumazau gestures and strokes vary by region and village.
