Achab

Ahab - seventh king of the northern kingdom of Israel; King Omri's son, continued his father's policy, seeking to unify the country. He defeated the Moabites and Bar Hadad II, the king of the Aramaeans, with whom he later made a covenant, leading the war against the Assyrians. He maintained peace with the kingdom of Judah. He joined the Phoenicians through a marriage with Jezebel, the daughter of Etbaal I, king of Tire, who introduced to Israel the worship of Baal and Asher, and Ahab was condemned by God, as Elijah prophesied. In the Bible, his name has become synonymous with wickedness, reminiscent of hostility to the prophet Elias, the introduction of Baal's worship, and the conviction of the death of Nabot of his wife, Queen Jezebel, for unproven guilt. Achab not only introduced Baal as a god to the capital of his state, but also, at the request of Jezebel, he had raised pagan altars on many of the hills, where under the cover of the groves the priests and other participants of the deceptive cult exerted their pernicious influence until almost all of Israel followed them. He was killed during the siege of Ramot in Gilead by the Aramaeans. His successor was Ahaziah.

Achab – siódmy król północnego królestwa Izraela; syn króla Omriego, kontynuował politykę ojca, dążąc do zjednoczenia kraju. Pokonał Moabitów i Bar Hadada II − króla Aramejczyków, z którym później zawarł przymierze, prowadząc wojny z Asyryjczykami. Utrzymał pokój z królestwem Judy. Sprzymierzył się z Fenicjanami przez małżeństwo z Izebel, córką Etbaala I, króla Tyru, która wprowadziła do Izraela kult Baala i Aszery, wskutek czego Achab został potępiony przez Boga, o czym oznajmił prorok Eliasz. W Biblii jego imię stało się synonimem niegodziwości, pamiętny wrogością okazywaną prorokowi Eliaszowi, wprowadzeniem kultu Baala i skazaniem na śmierć Nabota z namowy swej żony, królowej Jezebel, za niepopełnione winy. Achab nie tylko wprowadził Baala jako boga do stolicy swego państwa, ale ponadto za namową Jezebel wzniósł ołtarze pogańskie na wielu wzgórzach, gdzie pod osłoną gajów kapłani i inni uczestnicy zwodniczego kultu wywierali swój zgubny wpływ, aż cały niemal Izrael poszedł za nimi. Zginął podczas oblężenia Ramot w Gileadzie przez Aramejczyków. Jego następcą był Ochozjasz.
