Biological membrane

Błona biologiczna

Biological membrane, biomembrane - membrane surrounding or separating distinct compartments, usually in cells. They include both cell membranes and internal organelles membranes, such as mitochondria, tylacids, or discs in rods and suppositories. They are the basic building blocks of all organisms, both prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Despite the great diversity of structures surrounded by membranes, the basis for the construction of biological membranes in all organisms is essentially the same. According to the liquid mosaic model proposed by Jonathan Singer and Garth Nicolson in 1972, each cell membrane produces a liquid bilayer of phospholipid molecules in which proteins are immersed. Biological membranes perform many functions. First of all, they separate the interior of a given compartment from the external environment, which is the basis for maintaining its distinctiveness and integrity. Pomimo wielkiego zróżnicowania struktur otoczonych błonami, podstawy budowy błon biologicznych we wszystkich organizmach są w zasadzie te same.
