gastornis

Gastornis

Gastornis - a kind of prehistoric birds unable to fly, living at the end of the Paleocene and in the Eocene, about 56-40 million years ago. For some time they were the greatest land vehicles. Outdoors in the 19th century, Gastornis was originally described on the basis of European finds, and then the remains of a large non-volatile bird of similar age from North America are described under the name of Diatryma. Contemporary research has determined that American and European forms are of the same type, therefore, according to the principle of priority, taxonomy was adopted previously established generic name Gastornis for forms formerly known as Diatryma. One species - Gastornis giganteus lived in New Mexico 50 million years ago. Eric Buffetaut also famously familiarized Gastornis with the Asian genus Zhongyuanus, while maintaining its typical species, Z. xichuanensis, as a distinct species within the genus Gastornis. Not sure what he was eating - according to different authors could be carnivorous or herbivorous.
