Elevated - Severe swelling of the limbs due to impaired drainage of the lymph. Caused by a lymph node, massive lymph node obstruction or smaller lymph vessels. It is most often found in extensive metastases of breast cancer to axillary lymph nodes or after surgical removal. It can also be a result of scarring after trauma, irradiation, surgery and filamentous infection in the lymph nodes. Elephants are also caused by the nematode Bancrofti. The females of this nematode live in lymph nodes, there are so called. microtubules at night, larvae appearing in the blood at night to get into the blood sucked through the mosquito into his intestine. Inside the mosquito larvae grow and settle at the base of his dagger. At night, Wuchurerii larvae stay in the blood vessels of the internal organs. Słoniowacizna - nasilony obrzęk kończyn na skutek utrudnionego odpływu chłonki. Spowodowany zaczopowaniem pni chłonnych, masywną niedrożnością węzłów chłonnych lub mniejszych naczyń limfatycznych. Najczęściej występuje w rozległych przerzutach raka sutka do węzłów chłonnych pachowych lub po ich operacyjnym usunięciu. Może być również skutkiem bliznowacenia po urazie, napromieniowaniu, operacji oraz zakażenia nitkowcem bytującym w naczyniach chłonnych. Słoniowacizna wywoływana jest także przez nicienia Wuchereria bancrofti. Samice tego nicienia żyją w węzłach chłonnych, tam rodzą tzw. mikrofilarie nocne, larwy pojawiające się we krwi nocą, by dostać się z krwią wysysaną przez komara do jego jelita. We wnętrzu komara larwy rosną i osiedlają się u nasady jego sztylecików. W nocy larwy Wuchurerii przebywają w naczyniach krwionośnych organów wewnętrznych.
