Ganges

Ganges

Ganges, a river in southern Asia, flowing through India and Bangladesh. Its length is 2700 km and the basin area is 1125 k. km². The Ganges flows into the Bengal Gulf that is part of the Indian Ocean. Major port cities on the Ganges: ▪ Varanasi ▪ Patna ▪ Allahabad ▪ Kanpur The sources of the Ganges are located in the Himalayas, in several mountain glaciers to the west of the Nanda Devi Range. Initially it flows eastward, parallel to the Himalayan chain. Then, after breaking through the Siwalik Mountains, it flows into the Ganges Lowland. Ganges waters are used by a wide-ranging network of canals and irrigation facilities. Although the Ganges lies in India, the vast majority of its vast delta is in Bangladesh, where the river joins the Brahmaputra, creating the world's largest multi-armed delta of 80,000. km². The Ganges is characterized by high fluctuations in water levels up to 15 m. The largest aquifers begin in April, culminating in August-September, causing flooding. Ganges, – rzeka w południowej Azji, przepływająca przez Indie i Bangladesz. Jej długość wynosi 2700 km, a powierzchnia dorzecza 1125 tys. km². Ganges uchodzi do Zatoki Bengalskiej będącej częścią Oceanu Indyjskiego.
