Gyges

Gyges

Gyges was the king of Lydia and the founder of the Mermen dynasty. Croesus. Basically, Gyges was a usurper, since Lydia's power was taken over by the murder of her king, Kandaules, a representative of the Heraclid dynasty, without any legitimate grounds. Gyges pursued an aggressive policy towards Greek cities in Asia Minor: Smyrna, Magnesia, Miletus and Colophon. However, its aim was not to destroy them, nor to completely deprive political independence, but to derive income from them, among other things. by imposing tributes. He contributed to Lidia's prosperity through the development of trade, extending east to the Ephesus trade route and taking advantage of the convenient location of the capital, Sardinia. Gyges also maneuvered between the then great powers: first he joined Assyria and then went to Egypt, supporting Psametych I, who fought for the liberation of Egypt from the Assyrian occupation. Gyges died in 652 BC. During the Battle of Ligdamis during the Kimmer invasion. ^ Brian Haughton: Treasures of the past. Ed. I. Poznań Publishing House, Rebis, 2013, p. 59. Gyges był królem Lidii i założycielem dynastii Mermnadów, do której należał m.in. Krezus.
