Klismos

Klismos

Klismos - a kind of chair used in ancient Greece; It was already known in the archaic period, its most mature form reached in the 5th century BC. The chair had an arched, strongly bent outward, tapering legs; from which the back turned into a tilted back. The horizontal backrest was originally straight, then took a bent form, more comfortable for the sitting person. The furniture was light and elegant, very well adjusted to the proportions of the human body. The original Greek furniture, also klismos, has not been preserved, and we know from them on vase paintings, bas-reliefs, small terracotta figurines and literature. In these performances klismos is used primarily by women, men sit on thronos or kathedra, due to this is probably the low endurance of the first. It is believed that because of its delicate construction, klismos was unstable. The seat was woven with leather straps or ropes.
