Laudanum

Laudanum

Laudanum - former name for opium tincture, containing about 10% opium. In the sixteenth century, Paracelsus discovered that alkaloids contained in opium are better soluble in alcohol than in water. At first, every alcoholic opium extract was called laudanum, and the name was introduced by Paracelsus himself. However, only Thomas Sydenham introduced the laudanum widely for healing. He published in 1676 the work of the Medical Observations Concerning the History and Cure of Acute Diseases, in which he recommended laudanum for the treatment of numerous diseases, starting about 250 years of laudanum in the history of medicine. In the 18th and 19th centuries laudanum was used as a treatment for many - even banal - illnesses, causing numerous cases of addiction. In addition, it was enhanced by the fact that laudanum was cheaper than wine or gin as it was not excise duty. It was only in the early years of the twentieth century that laudanum was used in connection with its recognition as a drug. His victim was Abraham Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. Jednakże dopiero Thomas Sydenham wprowadził laudanum szeroko do lecznictwa. Opublikował on w 1676 r. pracę Medical Observations Concerning the History and Cure of Acute Diseases, w której polecał laudanum w terapii licznych chorób, zapoczątkowując około 250-letni okres świetności laudanum w historii medycyny.
