Manitoba

Manitoba

Manitoba - Canadian province lying in the middle of the country. It borders on Ontario to the west, Saskatchewan to the west, Nunavut to the north, and the states of Minnesota and North Dakota to the south. Winnipeg is the largest city in the province and at the same time its capital. The name Manitoba comes from deformed words in Manito-bah or Krishna-lime, meaning "ghost straits". It refers to the bottlenecks on Lake Manitoba, where the rapidly flowing stream of boulders emitted rumbling sounds. According to Indian beliefs, these were the sounds of the magical drum of Manitou, the Algonquin spirit.
