Mem - in memetics is the name of a unit of cultural evolution, analogous to a gene, which is a unit of biological evolution. Mem – w memetyce to nazwa jednostki ewolucji kulturowej, analogicznej do genu, będącego jednostką ewolucji biologicznej. Termin został wprowadzony przez biologa Richarda Dawkinsa w książce Samolubny gen. Memy powielają się poprzez naśladownictwo, w procesie ich replikacji działa dobór naturalny. Podlegają również mutacji. Aktualnie w memetyce istnieją równolegle alternatywne definicje pojęcia memu: ▪ mem jest jednostką informacji kulturowej, zapisanej w mózgu. Jego oddziaływanie jest widoczne dzięki obserwacji efektów socjotypowych, ▪ mem jest jednostką informacji zapisanej w mózgu lub na innym nośniku: w książce, na płycie CD, na ulotce reklamowej itd. W tym przypadku pojęcie memu i socjotypu się zlewają, ▪ mem jest autonomiczną strukturą neuronalną w mózgu, będącą nośnikiem informacji kulturowej. Wyjaśnienie istoty memu przytoczyła Susan Blackmore w książce Maszyna memowa: „Jeśli wasze irytujące nucenie przy pracy zaraża resztę biura obiema zwrotkami Jeruzalem Blake’a, memem jest cała ta natchniona pieśń.
