Memphis - Greek name for one of the most important cities of ancient Egypt, the capital of the Old Kingdom (III-VI dynasty). According to Herodotus, the city of Memphis was to be founded by Menes, who united Lower and Upper Egypt and became the first ruler of united Egypt. Menes was to build a dam to protect the city from the Nile floods. Menesa's successor ordered to build, as Herodotus wrote, the first palace in the city. The name Memphis comes from the name Pepi and Men-nefer ("Excellent") and was used to describe the whole town since the 18th dynasty. The oldest name of the town was Inebu-hed ("White Wall"), probably from the wall of the royal residence. In the Middle Ages Memphis was named Anch-taui ("Who Live Both Countries", ie Egypt), which underscores the location of Memphis exactly on the border between Upper and Lower Egypt (the valley and the Nile delta). The remains of Memphis are located on the west bank of the Nile, about 20 km south of Cairo (near the village of Mit Rahina). Today, there was hardly anything left in this ancient city.

Memfis – grecka nazwa jednego z najważniejszych miast starożytnego Egiptu, stolicy w epoce Starego Państwa (III-VI dynastia). Wedle Herodota miasto Memfis miało zostać założone przez Menesa, który zjednoczył Dolny i Górny Egipt i stał się pierwszym władcą zjednoczonego Egiptu. Menes miał wznieść tamę, by chronić miasto przed wylewami Nilu. Następca Menesa polecił zbudować, jak pisze Herodot, pierwszy pałac w mieście. Nazwa Memfis pochodzi od nazwy piramidy Pepiego I Men-nefer ("Doskonałe Trwanie") i używana była na określenie całego miasta od czasów XVIII dynastii. Najstarsza nazwa miasta brzmiała Inebu-hedż ("Biały mur"), zapewne od muru królewskiej rezydencji. W czasach Średniego Państwa Memfis określano nazwą Anch-taui ("Którym żyją Oba Kraje", tj. Egipt), co podkreśla położenie Memfis dokładnie na granicy między Górnym i Dolnym Egiptem (doliną i deltą Nilu). Pozostałości Memfis znajdują na zachodnim brzegu Nilu, ok. 20 km na południe od Kairu (w pobliżu wioski Mit Rahina). Dzisiaj z tego wielkiego w starożytności miasta nie pozostało prawie nic.
