Négritude

Négritude - literary and political movement, launched in Paris in 1930 in response to the development of French colonialism and racism. Its creators were Léopold Sédar Senghor, Aimé Césaire and Léon Damas of French Guiana. The négritude term for Negro was first used in 1935 by Césaire in his third issue L'Étudiant noir. The purpose of the movement was to affirm the history and civilization of the black man against the devaluing values of Western civilization; safeguarding the cultural heritage of the black population of western colonies, as well as the black immigrants and their descendants in Western countries. At the same time the movement rejected works related to the assimilation of cultures, seeking to emphasize and glorify the original Negro values. The Négritude movement was, to a certain extent, the European voice of the Afro-American Harlem Renaissance movement, which spread throughout the 1920s and 1930s in black neighborhoods of major US cities and reached Europe. thanks to the works of black writers such as Langston Hughes and Richard Wright. Jednocześnie ruch odrzucał wytwory związane z asymilacją kultur, dążąc do podkreślenia i gloryfikacji pierwotnych wartości murzyńskich.
