Périgord

Périgord is a historic region in southwestern France, in northern Aquitaine, in the modern department of the Dordogne, and partly in Lot and Garonne. The major cities of Périgord are Périgueux and Bergerac. Périgord is a lowland, heavily forested land, located west of the Central Massif, crossed by the Dordogne, Lot and other tributaries of Garonne. In ancient times the land was inhabited by the Gallican tribe of Petrocoria. In the 9th century Périgord became a county, belonging to the princes of Aquitaine. During the Hundred Years' War the county was temporarily in possession of the Kingdom of England. In the sixteenth century incorporated into the Kingdom of Navarre, Périgord eventually returned to France in 1607, until the revolution, forming part of Guinea. Regional culinary specialties are truffles and foie gras. There are also local mushrooms and chanterelles. The Périgord vineyards in the Middle Ages were devastated by the phoenician in 1876-1883. W IX wieku Périgord został hrabstwem, należącym do książąt Akwitanii. W czasie wojny stuletniej hrabstwo przejściowo znajdowało się w posiadaniu Królestwa Anglii. W XVI wieku włączony do Królestwa Nawarry, Périgord ostatecznie powrócił do Francji w 1607 roku, do czasu rewolucji stanowiąc część prowincji Gujenny.
