Stygobiont

Stygobiont

Stygobiont, freatobiont - organism adapted to live in the groundwater. Due to the specific living conditions of the stygobions, specific adaptations are observed, such as disappearance of the visual organs, loss of pigment in the skin and surface coatings. In these animals there is photophobia, the disappearance of seasonal seasons, the slowing down of metabolic processes, the strong development of the organs of touch and organs to facilitate the spatial orientation in the dark. Due to the origin of stygal, some stygobions are derived from marine forms, some from freshwater forms. In Poland, stygobionty occurs only in the mountains. Due to periods in which stygobions have adapted to the groundwater environment, the following are distinguished: ▪ paleostybiosa - species with the oldest pedigree; ▪ neostybosis - species with a younger pedigree; ▪ substitutes - species that have adapted to styrene relatively recently. Stygobiont, freatobiont – organizm przystosowany do życia w wodach podziemnych.
