Albedo

Albedo

Albedo is a relative measure of the amount of reflected light, which occurs on surfaces in a direct or diffused way. It is therefore a measure of the reflectivity of the surface of a body. The word derives from the Latin albedus, from albus. Albedo can be defined as the ratio between the reflected electromagnetic irradiance and the incident quantity. It is a dimensionless measure, that is, without units. The ratio is usually presented by percentage and is an important radiometric parameter used in atmospheric sciences, climatology, remote sensing and astronomy. The reflected / incident ratio depends on the frequency of the radiation considered and so we can speak in monochromatic and panchromatic albedo. If not specified, it refers to an average over a spectral band. If the surface is sufficiently smooth, the albedo will also depend on the angle of incidence of the radiation. Examples: the visible albedo of recent snow surface is high, around 0.
