Arabinose

Arabinose

Arabinose is an aldopentose; a monosaccharide consisting of five carbon atoms and an aldehyde functional group. Due to biosynthesis, most naturally occurring saccharides have the "D-" conformation, being structurally analogous to D-glyceraldehyde. However, L-arabinose is more abundant than D-arabinose in nature, and can be found in the composition of some biopolymers, such as hemicellulose or pectin.
