Bivalve

Bivalvia

In biology, bivalvia formerly Pelecypoda and Lamellibranchia, is the class of phylum Mollusca that includes aquatic animals popularly designated by bivalves. These organisms are characterized by the presence of a carbonate shell formed by two leaflets. This shell protects the body from the mollusk, among them there is the muscular foot and the inhalant and exhalation siphons for the entrance and exit of the water, which brings oxygen, then absorbed by direct diffusion through the gill slices, as well as food and also increases the risk of intoxications, as this type of feeding is common in fixed animals representing a great risk if the oyster and / or shellfish come into contact with pollution. The group emerged in the Cambrian and is currently very diverse, with about 15,000 species. The separation of the different subclasses is done by the type and structure of the gills in living organisms, and by the characteristics of the valves in the fossil bivalves. The mussel, the clamshell and the conch are popular examples of bivalves that serve as food for man. Oysters are also the origin of pearls.
