Boiardo

Boiardo

Boiardo was the title attributed to members of the Russian aristocracy from the tenth to the seventeenth century. The word boiardo comes from the Russian бояре, plural of боярын, through the French boyard. In feudal Russia, they constituted the upper class and held political power through the boy's Duma. Apart from extensive estates they held, they were the principal legislators of the Principality of Kiev. Even after Moscow became the center of decision, with the centralization of power for the role of the Grand Duke of Muscovy, his influence still lingered. The boy's Duma, which initially had about 30 members, has been progressively expanding, having even had close to 100 members as early as the 17th century. It was, however, abolished by Peter the Great in 1711. In literature, Bram Stoker's Count Dracula was a boiard.
