Umbilicus rupestris

Umbilicus rupestris

Cotyledon umbilicus-veneris auct. non L. Umbilicus rupestris is a plant commonly known as bacelos, steaks, umbrellas, umbrellas, cushions, roof-tops, napkins, conches, copilas, cougilgos, ear-of-monk, umbrel-roofing and navel-of-venus. It is a plant with flower, fleshy, perennial, of the family of Crassuláceas. Venus navels can reach 30 cm in height. The bell-shaped flowers, pale pinkish-greenish in color, begin to appear in May, and the green fruits ripen throughout the summer. Detail of Umbilicus rupestris near Stirling, Scotland. Both the vernacular name, "navel-de-venus" and the scientific name of the genus "Umbilicus" are due to the rounded form of the leaves, with a belly-like depression in the center. The plant is found all over southern and western Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean region, being frequent in walls and walls where there is shade or in moist cracks of rocky surfaces where few more plants can be developed.
