Confessor

Confessor

Confessor or Confessor of the Faith is a male title granted by the Catholic Church and Orthodox Church to saints and blessed who were not martyred. Historically, the title of confessor was granted to all those who suffered persecution and torture by faith, but not to the point of martyrdom. It is often used to define any saint as well as those who have been declared blessed, who can not be categorized as a martyr, apostle, evangelist, or virgin. As Christianity emerged as the dominant religion in Europe after the fifth century, persecutions became rare, and the title was given to holy men who lived a sacred life, but suffered some kind of attack, not properly because they were Christians, as Saint Louis de Montfort, who survived a poisoning by other priests for the envy of his preaching. Perhaps the best-known example is that of the English king Edward the Confessor. It is possible that confessors have other titles, such as Pope and confessor, confessor and Doctor of the Church, among others.
