WHAT DOES CORNISO MEAN IN PORTUGUESE?

Cornus mas

The Cornus mas, is a species of plant belonging to the genus Cornus, known for its cherry-like fruits. It is native to southern Europe, Mediterranean and Southwest Asia. It is a shrub of medium to large size, being able to reach arboreal size, growing between 5 and 12 m in height. It has a deciduous habit, with its dark brown branches with smaller greenish branches. The leaves are opposite, 4-10 cm long and 2-4 cm wide and are oval to oblong in shape, with a whole margin. The flowers are small and formed by four yellow petals, arranged in inflorescences of between 10 and 25 flowers, appearing these at the end of the winter, before the appearance of the first leaves. The fruit is an oblong and red drupe when ripe, containing a single seed and being about 2 cm long and 1.5 cm in diameter. The fruit is edible, having an acid taste. What's more, it is rich in vitamins A, B and K1. It is used mainly in the production of jams, and is also consumed when it dries. In Armenia, the fruit is used in the distillation of vodka.
