Datura

Datura

Datura L. is a botanical genus belonging to the Solanaceae family. It consists of about fourteen species of annuals or perennials of short life. Its taxonomy is complex and difficult, being constantly and erroneously called "Lily" due to its great similarity in the flowers with the plants of the genus Lilium, because, for laymen, it is difficult to distinguish. It is common to divide the genus into four sections: Brugmansia, Stramonium, Datura, and Ceratocaulis. There have been many discussions about this and other criteria. Today, experts agree that at least Brugmansia should be separated, so in new classification systems it has become a distinct genus, leaving eight species for the genus Datura.
