Photius I of Constantinople was the patriarch of Constantinople between 858 and 867 and again between 877 and 886 He is recognized by the Orthodox Church as St. Photius the Great. Photius is considered the most powerful and influential patriarch of Constantinople since John Chrysostom and as the most important intellectual of his time, "the light of the ninth century revival." He was a central figure both in the conversion of the Slavs to Christianity and in the schism of Photius. He was a well-bred man born of a noble family of Constantinople. His great-uncle was the late Patriarch Tarasio. He intended to become a monk, but chose to be an academic and a statesman instead. In 858, Emperor Michael III, the Drunkard deposed the patriarch Ignatius and Photius, still a layman, was taken to the patriarchal throne in his place. In the midst of power struggles between the pope and the Byzantine emperor, Ignatius was reinstated and Photius was overthrown for the first time. He resumed his position with the death of Ignatius in 877 by order of the emperor and with the approval of the new pope, John VIII.
