Phototropism or phototaxis is the designation given to the movement of living beings, especially plants, especially the sunflower; in response to light stimuli which may be facing the light source, and opposite or perpendicular to the light source. For example, phototropism in plants is such that the stem reacts positively, i.e. elongates towards the light, and the root reacts negatively, leading to a growth thereof away from the light source. Tropism whose exciting agents is light. The stems approach the light source and therefore have positive phototropism. The roots curl in opposite direction to the light source, presenting negative phototropism. When a stem is unilaterally illuminated, photo destruction occurs on the illuminated face of part of the existing AIA, which inhibits growth in that region. With this, the side remaining in the dark grows more, determining the curvature of the stem towards the light source.

Fototropismo ou fototaxia é a designação dada ao movimento dos seres vivos, especialmente das plantas,com destaque para o girassol; em resposta a estímulos luminosos que poderão ser de frente para a fonte de luz, e em sentido oposto a esta ou perpendicular à direcção desta. Por exemplo, o fototropismo nas plantas é tal que o caule apresenta reacção positiva, isto é alonga-se em direcção à luz, e a raiz reacção negativa, conduzindo a um crescimento desta em afastamento da fonte luminosa. Tropismo cujo agentes excitante é a luz. Os caules aproximam-se da fonte luminosa e, portanto, têm fototropismo positivo. Já as raízes curvam-se em direção oposta à fonte luminosa, apresentando fototropismo negativo. Quando se ilumina um caule de maneira unilateral, na face iluminada ocorre foto destruição de parte do AIA ali existente, o que inibe o crescimento naquela região. Com isso, o lado que permanece no escuro cresce mais, determinando a curvatura do caule em direção à fonte luminosa.
