General

General is the general designation of a high-ranking officer in the armed forces of most countries. The term both can be used generically to designate a subclass of officers - the general officers - as can be used to designate a specific patent. In the first case it may also apply to high-ranking Navy officers - generally known as admirals - but in the latter case it is usually only applicable to patents in armies and in most air forces. At the origin of the term is the Latin word generalis which means, roughly, chief. However, in the armies of the Roman Empire, the general officer in command of a legion had the title of legato. The general's patent began to emerge in the armies of Europe in the seventeenth century, from the old patent of captain-general. The post of captain-general meant the "general" captain, that is, the captain of the whole army. The denomination "captain-general" was contracted, in the majority of the armies, to simply "general".

O termo tanto pode ser usado, genericamente, para designar uma subclasse de oficiais - os oficiais generais - como pode ser usado para designar uma patente específica. No primeiro caso pode também aplicar-se aos oficiais de alta patente da Marinha - genericamente, também conhecidos por almirantes - mas, no segundo caso, normalmente só é aplicável a patentes existentes nos exércitos e na maioria das forças aéreas. Na origem do termo está a palavra latina generalis que significa, grosso modo, chefe. Contudo, nos exércitos do Império Romano, o oficial general responsável pelo comando de uma legião tinha o título de legato. A patente de general começou a surgir nos exércitos da Europa no século XVII, a partir da antiga patente de capitão-general. O posto de capitão-general, significava o capitão "geral", ou seja, o capitão de todo o exército. A denominação "capitão-general" foi contraída, na maioria dos exércitos, para, simplesmente, "general".
