Hematite

Hematita

Hematite or hematite is a mineral of chemical formula iron oxide III, one of several iron oxides. The mineral sometimes contains small amounts of titanium. It can be used as a gem and when it receives faceted lapidation it is often called diamond-black. It is a very common mineral, black to gray, brown to reddish brown or red. The varieties are: bloodstone, pink iron, Kidney ore, martite, paint, iridescent hematite and titanium-hematite. Gray hematite deposits are typically found in places where there was standing water or sources of hot mineral water, such as those in Yellowstone. The mineral can be found out of the water or in the bottom of a lake or other place with still water. However, hematite may also form in the absence of water as a result of volcanic activity. It is the main iron ore, also being used as pigment, polishing material and as a gem.
