Apatite is a mineral of the phosphate group, with the following variants: hydroxyapatite, fluorapatite, and chlorapatite, so named because of high concentrations of hydroxide, fluoride, and chloride ions, respectively, in their crystalline structure. Its general formula is Ca32. Phosphorite is the name given to the impure apatite. Apatite is one of the few minerals to be produced and used by biological systems. Hydroxyapatite is the main component of dental enamel, is also present in the pineal gland, and has considerable participation in bone material. Fluorapatite is slightly stronger than hydroxyapatite. Hence the use of fluoridated water, which allows hydroxide ions to be replaced by fluoride in the teeth, making them a little stronger, although it may spot them frequently and focus on other organs such as bone tissue, causing disease. Some authors believe that the formation of fluorapatite on the tooth surface is safer through topical use of the toothpaste.

Sua fórmula geral é Ca32. Fosforita é o nome dado à apatita impura. A apatita é um dos poucos minerais a serem produzidos e utilizados por sistemas biológicos. A hidroxiapatita é o principal componente do esmalte dentário, está presente também na glândula Pineal, e tem considerável participação no material ósseo. A fluorapatita é ligeiramente mais resistente que a hidroxiapatita. Por isso o uso de água fluorada, que permite a substituição dos íons hidróxido por fluoreto nos dentes, tornando-os um pouco mais fortes, embora possa manchá-los frequentemente e se concentrar em outros órgãos, como o tecido ósseo, causando doenças. Alguns autores acreditam que é mais segura a formação da fluorapatita na superfície do dente, através do uso tópico do creme dental.
