Herpangina

Herpangina

Herpangina of herp, itching, and angina, sore throat, is the name of a mouth infection caused by coxsackie virus. Usually, herpangina is produced by a particular line of coxsackievirus A, but may also be caused by coxsackievirus B or echovirus. It is more common in children. Although herpangina may be asymptomatic, the commonly associated symptoms are high fever and sore throat. A small number of lesions are formed in the posterior portion of the mouth, particularly the soft palate or tonsillar pillars. The lesions initially progress from red macules to vesicles and then to ulcerations that may be 2 to 4 mm in size. Lesions heal in 7 to 10 days.
