Iniencephaly is an uncommon neural tube defect that combines extreme retroflexion of the head with severe defects of the spine. The affected child tends to be of short stature and present a disproportionately large head. The diagnosis can be made immediately after birth because the head has a retroflexion so serious that the guy looks up. The skin of the face is connected directly to the skin of the chest and the scalp is connected directly to the skin of the back. Usually, the neck is absent. Most individuals with iniencephaly have other associated anomalies such as anencephaly, cephalosis, hydrocephalus, cyclopia, absence of the mandible, cleft lip and cleft palate, cardiovascular disorders, diaphragmatic hernias, and gastrointestinal malformations. The disorder is more common in girls. The prognosis for patients with iniencephaly is extremely poor. Newborn infants with iniencephalia rarely live more than a few hours. The distortion of the body of the fetus can also represent a danger to the life of the mother.

O menino afetado tende a ser de estatura baixa e apresentar uma cabeça desproporcionadamente grande. O diagnóstico pode-se realizar imediatamente após o nascimento porque a cabeça apresenta uma retroflexão tão séria que o cara olha para acima. A pele do rosto está conectada diretamente à pele do peito e o couro cabeludo está conectado diretamente à pele da costas. Geralmente, o pescoço está ausente. A maioria dos indivíduos com iniencefalia têm outras anomalias associadas tais como anencefalia, cefalose, hidrocefalia, ciclopia, ausência da mandíbula, lábio leporino e paladar hendido, trastornos cardiovasculares, hérnias do diafragma e malformações gastrointestinais. O trastorno é mais comum nas meninas. O prognóstico para os pacientes com iniencefalia é extremamente pobre. Os recém nascidos com iniencefalia muito poucas vezes vivem mais de umas horas. A distorção do corpo do feto também pode representar um perigo para a vida da mãe.
