The marimba is a percussion instrument, an idiophon, similar to xylophone, with lamellae of wood, usually pau-santo or rosewood, which when drilled with drumsticks produce a sweet and melodious sound. A "generic" copy is the ceramophone. The marimbas are of African origin, already in existence for hundreds of years. In the 16th century, intercultural exchange took the marimba to the Americas, where it was adopted and is now part of the music of several countries, especially Guatemala, the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas in southern Mexico and Nicaragua. The instrument is usually played with two to six drumsticks coated with wool or felt, and can also be punctured with the hands.

Um exemplar "genérico" é o ceramofone. As marimbas são de origem africana, já em existência há centenas de anos. No século XVI, o intercâmbio intercultural levou a marimba às Américas, onde foi adoptada e faz hoje parte da música de vários países, especialmente a Guatemala, os estados de Oaxaca e Chiapas no sul do México e a Nicarágua. O instrumento geralmente é tocado com duas a seis baquetas revestidas de lã ou feltro, podendo ainda ser percutido com as mãos.
