Pepper

Pimentão

Pepper or Pimento refers to a group of cultivars of the species Capsicum annuum, widely used in cooking around the world. The various cultivars produce fruits with different colors, the best known being green, yellow and red. But there are other very exotic varieties, such as white, purple, bluish, black and orange. They are peppers native to Mexico, Central America and northern South America. They are sometimes grouped together with other little pungent peppers under the name of sweet peppers. In Portugal, the term pepper can be synonymous with pepper, that is, the plant or fruit described in this text, as the spice that is produced from the fruit, also known as paprica. There are many people who make a clear distinction, not associating peppers to the fruit, however, for example, the 6th edition of the Dictionary of Portuguese Language of Porto Editora, does not even mention the spice in the entry "chili." Due to the beauty of its fruits, there are those who cultivate them as ornamental plants. This fruit is a very appreciated food, being rich in vitamins and minerals.
